Third-Year Advanced Placement Optometry Student: Shymaa Mohamed

ShymaaThe alarm buzzes at 5:30 a.m. and before I can even think about hitting snooze, I’m up—because being a student, a mom of four, and a wife means there’s no time to waste! My morning routine is a whirlwind: checking in on my kids via video call, making sure everyone is set for the day, grabbing a much-needed cup of coffee, and squeezing in a quick review of today’s lectures before heading to campus.

By 8:00 a.m., I’m in class, surrounded by my fellow future optometrists. Whether we’re diving into the complexities of ocular pathology, refining our skills in clinical procedures, or discussing the latest advancements in eye care, the morning flies by in a blur of learning, note-taking, and occasional caffeine refills. There’s an undeniable energy in the air—a shared passion for the profession that keeps us motivated even through the toughest coursework.

Lunchtime means a short break, but my mind is still racing. A quick check-in with my family reassures me that all is well back home. Balancing school and family life isn’t easy, but my kids are my biggest cheerleaders, and their encouragement fuels me through the long days.

The afternoon is where the real magic happens—clinic time! There’s nothing quite like putting our knowledge into practice, working with real patients, and honing our clinical skills under the guidance of experienced faculty. From conducting refractions to diagnosing ocular conditions, every patient interaction is a reminder of why I chose this path. The satisfaction of helping someone see clearly makes every late-night study session worth it.

On some days, my schedule extends into the evening with additional clinic hours or study groups. It’s exhausting but exhilarating, knowing that each moment is shaping me into the optometrist I aspire to be. Before heading home (or back to my study nook), I steal another quick video call with my husband and kids, catching up on their day and sharing mine. It’s not always easy being away, but their love and support make the distance feel a little smaller.

By the time I finally wind down for the night, I reflect on the day’s lessons, both in and out of the classroom. Optometry school is demanding, but it’s also an incredible journey filled with knowledge, hands-on experience, and a growing sense of purpose. And through it all, I’m not just learning to care for patients—I’m showing my kids that with passion, determination, and a whole lot of coffee, you can achieve your dreams.
