Bored This Summer? We’ve Got You Covered!

With the weather getting warmer and the sun setting later, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy unique summer activities close to the University.

Briar Bush focuses on educating people of all ages about nature preservation and local wildlife. Free for Abington residents (non-residents pay a small fee), their nature museum features live animals. However, the nature center’s forest trails are free for everyone to explore.

Briar Bush is hosting two upcoming events:

  • Pond-apalooza; (July 16, 7:00-8:00 p.m.): Participants use a dip net to catch and identify the animals living in the Briar Bush pond. $10.80 for Abington residents, $12.00 for non-residents.
  • Summer Night Bio-Blitz; (August 13, 7:00-8:00 p.m.): Participants help inspect all the living creatures found on the trails. $10.80 for Abington residents, $12.00 for non-residents.

Family-friendly, open to all ages, and most importantly, FREE, concerts are held on Thursday evenings from June 26 to August 7 (except July 3). You can bring your own food or purchase something to eat from their onsite food trucks. Each week offers a different opening and headlining band, featuring a mix of genres such as R&B, folk, and rock.

Hosted by the Abington Presbyterian Church on July 19, at 8:00 a.m., this race involves super soakers and hoses on the sides, cooling down the runners and walkers. Prizes include $25, $50, and $100 to the top 3 male and female winners, with the cost of entry $35 for adults to either walk or run. The proceeds will be split between the Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the firefighters of the Abington Fire Company.

Located in Glenside, there are numerous restaurants and shops to enjoy in this walkable area.
